GREEN BAY, Wis. — Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is facing increased scrutiny after his team suffered a humiliating 35-14 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in the 2026 home opener, ending a remarkable 13-year streak of winning season debuts at Lambeau Field.
The Falcons, led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and star running back Bijan Robinson, dominated the Packers in what amounted to one of the worst performances of the LaFleur era. Penix completed 18-of-25 passes for 256 yards and a touchdown, while Robinson amassed 194 rushing yards and two touchdowns, adding nine receptions for 194 yards through the air.
“It was a butt-whooping,” LaFleur candidly admitted following the game, per NBC Sports. The loss dropped the Packers to 1-2 on the season, marking their worst start under LaFleur’s tenure.
The defeat exposed critical weaknesses on both sides of the ball. Green Bay’s offense struggled mightily, failing to establish the run, convert on third downs, protect quarterback Jordan Love, or move the ball efficiently through the air. Defensively, the Packers abandoned their usual strength against the run, allowing Robinson to gash them for over 200 total yards despite entering the game ranked second in the NFL in yards allowed per carry.
The loss was particularly painful given the historical context. The Packers’ 13-year home opener winning streak was tied for the longest in NFL history and came to an end against a Falcons team that had lost 34-3 at home the previous week.
“This is Week 2, and I’m not going to make light of it,” LaFleur said in his post-game press conference. “Certainly, we’re getting everything corrected, and there’s some things that we have to do schematically, as well. But I’m not going to overreact to it, either.”
However, many analysts and fans are questioning whether LaFleur’s measured response is appropriate given the severity of the loss. The defeat raises serious concerns about the Packers’ offensive identity and readiness to compete in a tough NFC North that includes improved Chicago, Detroit, and Dallas teams.
LaFleur, who received a contract extension last offseason following a disappointing 2025 season, now finds himself on the proverbial hot seat as questions mount about his ability to right the ship. With the Packers scheduled to face the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers next week before a brutal stretch of divisional games, the pressure is mounting for LaFleur to demonstrate immediate improvement or face increasing calls for change in Green Bay.
The loss represents a critical juncture for LaFleur’s tenure in Green Bay – one that could either serve as a wake-up call for necessary adjustments or signal the beginning of the end for one of the NFL’s longest-tenured head coaches.
