Paul Schrader — the screenwriter behind Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The Last Temptation of Christ — says he is turning to artificial intelligence to make his long-stalled crime noir Three Guns at Dawn, in an interview with The Playlist.
The project, which follows three criminal brothers, had languished in development for years. Schrader told The Playlist that actors passed on the roles and the film “sort of died” — until AI changed the equation. His comments about casting and about no longer needing actors drew immediate criticism online, but they also underscore how quickly generative tools are entering one of cinema’s most tradition-bound crafts.
Schrader, whose career spans five decades of American cinema, is not the first filmmaker to experiment with AI — but he may be the most prominent auteur to embrace it for an actual production after a project failed the traditional way. His comments land amid an industry-wide debate over AI-generated performances, copyright, and what “authorship” even means when a text prompt can replace a cast.
Whether Three Guns at Dawn turns out to be a curiosity or a turning point, it will be watched closely. If a script as celebrated as Schrader’s can finally reach the screen through AI, more stalled projects may follow the same path — and the line between filmmaker and technologist will keep getting blurrier.
