NASA-Backed Scientists Turn Plastic Waste Into Edible Cookies

Cookies made from plastic bottles sound like a joke – but a NASA-backed team of scientists has made them real. Researchers engineered a special type of yeast that can convert PET plastic and agricultural waste into edible, protein-rich ingredients, then 3D-printed them into small snacks called uBites.

From Bottle to Bite

The process starts with broken-down PET plastic – the material in most drink bottles – and leftover farm waste. Engineered yeast feeds on these unlikely ingredients and transforms them into proteins, fats, and vitamins. The team even coaxed it into producing natural vanilla flavoring, which is why the result resembles an actual cookie rather than a science experiment.

Built for Deep Space

The project was developed partly for NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge, which asks scientists to invent food systems that can sustain astronauts on long missions where every gram counts. The uBites system produces food from materials that would otherwise be garbage – exactly the kind of closed-loop thinking a journey to Mars demands.

Two Problems, One Solution

Plastic pollution and food insecurity are two of the world’s most stubborn problems. This research hints at a future where the two cancel each other out: waste becomes nutrition. The team hopes the technology could eventually support communities facing food shortages and provide reliable meals in extreme environments – from disaster zones to the surface of the Moon.
