Bill Belichick’s relationship with girlfriend Jordon Hudson is back in the spotlight, and this time the 74-year-old coach is addressing it head-on. In a Wall Street Journal interview published Wednesday, Belichick dismissed months of speculation that Hudson, 25, holds an unofficial role in his University of North Carolina football program, calling the narrative a “flat-out lie.”
The story traces back to an email Belichick sent shortly after taking the UNC job in December. Juggling five TV shows, a radio show and a book launch, he asked that requests for his personal appearances be forwarded to Hudson so they could be coordinated outside the university. When the email surfaced, it was framed as evidence that his girlfriend was involved in team operations.
“When I took the job here, it was December, and at that time I was doing five TV shows, the radio show, I had a book coming out,” Belichick said. “I sent an email when I got here and I said, ‘Can you please forward any requests to Jordon about my personal appearances so that I can work and coordinate them outside the university?'”
“Didn’t have anything to do with the university,” he added. “Well, that was leaked as released as ‘Jordon’s involved in every single thing that I do and she’s copied on every email.’ That’s just a flat-out lie.”
Belichick said coverage escalated from there. “The way the story was picked up was a long way from that,” he said. “Like, ‘She’s trying to be the general manager of the team,’ and it’s so ridiculous.” According to the coach, Hudson helps him schedule or review some things, but none of it involves North Carolina football.
The couple’s public appearances have fueled the attention. Hudson was a visible presence on the sideline at Kenan Memorial Stadium during the Tar Heels’ 35-3 win over East Tennessee State, and she has become a fixture of game-day coverage in her own right. Belichick, who won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, remains a talking point across the NFL even in his first college head-coaching season, and the crossover between football and celebrity culture is nothing new, as the frenzy around Travis Kelce’s receiving-yards milestone showed.
The scrutiny comes during a busy stretch for the program. Former UNC general manager Michael Lombardi resigned earlier this month amid an internal university investigation, and the Tar Heels are 2-0 with a marquee matchup ahead: Saturday’s game at Clemson, a team North Carolina has not beaten on the road since 2001.
Whether the noise fades may depend on results. For now, Belichick has made his position clear: Hudson has no role in the program, and the rest is, in his words, “so ridiculous.”
