NASA and SpaceX Delay Crew-13 After Finding a Leak in the Dragon Spacecraft

NASA and SpaceX have delayed the Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station after engineers found an oxidizer leak in the Dragon spacecraft’s propulsion system during prelaunch preparations. The issue was discovered during routine checkout, and teams are investigating before the flight can proceed.

It is exactly the kind of catch the commercial crew program is designed for. Hypergolic oxidizers, the chemicals that help power Dragon’s maneuvering thrusters, are corrosive and toxic, and any leak in their plumbing is treated as a grounding issue, not a negotiating point. Flying crew means every one of those systems must be signed off with zero open concerns.

How serious is it?

Neither NASA nor SpaceX has characterized the leak’s severity or a revised launch date, and that caution is standard. Propulsion leaks can range from a faulty valve seal, fixable in days, to something requiring component replacement that pushes the timeline out further. The spacecraft may need to be rolled back from the pad or swapped entirely, depending on what inspections reveal.

The bigger picture

Delays of this kind are the price of crew safety, and the commercial crew program’s record shows the value of taking them: no serious crew injury across a decade of Dragon flights. The station’s schedule has margin built in to absorb pushes like this one, with cargo flights and existing crews keeping operations running in the meantime.

For now, Crew-13 waits on the same principle that has governed human spaceflight since its start: check it twice, then fly.
